Keeping busy: Corangamite Shire’s annual roadside slashing and spraying program is well under way.

Each year council slashes almost 1200 kilometres of shire-managed roadsides to help with weed management, general maintenance of the roads and to reduce fire risk.

Shire manager works Lyall Bond said the first round of spraying started in September.

“A total of 195 kilometres of shoulder was sprayed to a width of four metres and another 1040 kilometres to two metres, depending on accessibility of the terrain.” he said

“Unsealed road intersections and stone wall sites were also sprayed.”

Mr Bond said the first round of slashing works has also started.

He said it would involve slashing a four-metre width along 353 kilometres of sealed roads and intersections.

“The second round of roadside vegetation management works for unsealed roads are anticipated to start in December 2024, depending on the weather,” Mr Bond said.

“Like last year, the second round of works will be mostly slashing.

“The target is to slash four metres wide on all the council managed roads, including unsealed roads, that are accessible for a four-metre-wide cut.

“We will also spray around the roadside signs and culverts.”
