Reflect on art
THIS month’s exhibition at the Courthouse Camperdown will ask residents to take some time to think about what art means to them.
Judy Armstrong, a member of the Corangamite Creatives, will be displaying an interactive exhibit featuring nine artworks and paper reflection forms.
Ms Armstrong said the ink symbols aims to “evoke emotions, feelings, and thoughts beyond initial impressions”.
“I find it fascinating how people perceive art,” she said.
“In this interactive exhibition, there are nine pieces – two really large pieces and seven really small ones – that I want people to actually interact with and tell me what they feel, what they think, on pieces on paper and leave the paper here.
“When you spend time with a piece, additional layers of emotion and meaning emerge – I’m particularly intrigued by these deeper responses.
“Symbols, akin to written language, convey meaning and facilitate communication.
“However, unlike language, ancient symbols often harbor deeper significance, residing in the recesses of our subconscious.”
A multi-media artist, Ms Armstrong encouraged residents to take the time to fill out the anonymous reflection sheets provided with the exhibition.
“It’s just for them to reflect on art and take a little bit more time than they normally do – more than a glance,” she said.
“What do you perceive when you encounter these symbols? What emotions do they evoke within you?
“Take 15 minutes to reflect and jot down your thoughts on the provided paper.
“No need for names – just genuine participation.”
Ms Armstrong said she enjoys exhibiting her work and is excited for this month’s exhibition.
“I am always a bit nervous, but everyone’s different and has a different viewpoint on art,” she said.
“It’s symbolism, and it’s all intuitive symbolism – my intuitive symbolism, so it’s very different.
“It’s not like any other culture, because it’s just mine.
“I love the interaction – that people can have their say about it.
“I just like to bring some art into the area, and some different art, just like most artists.”
