Rains low throughout October

A SIGNIFICANT downpour did little to change how dry the weather has been throughout the region during October.

Rainfall experienced in Terang and Mortlake did not reach the levels of the monthly long-term average in either town, a trend which has continued since July.

In Terang, 36.6mm of rain was recorded to have fallen throughout October, which was almost half the long-term average result for the month of 71.3mm.

The highest daily rainfall occurred on November 18, with 21mm falling over 24 hours – marking the fifth wettest day of the year.

The result is well below the October tally for Terang in 2023, when 66.4mm was recorded with a highest daily rainfall result of 8mm.

The result brings the total rainfall over Terang to 466mm through to October in 2024, far below the 666.5mm long-term average result over the same period.

Meanwhile in Mortlake, just 31.2mm fell throughout October.

The figure falls well below the long-term average throughout the month of 55.4mm.

The highest daily rainfall was recorded on October 18 with 9.2mm hitting the ground, marking the seventh wettest day of the year.

The October 2024 result was well below the result during the same month last year, when 47.4mm was recorded to have fell.

The result brings the total 2024 rainfall tally over Mortlake to 368.6mm through October, well below the long-term average of 493.7mm over the same period.

The low rainfall tally over both Terang and Mortlake continues the trend of dry weather experienced throughout 2024, with the monthly rainfall result reaching or surpassing the long-term average in only done so three months this year (January, April, July).
