No more Lids 4 Kids

AFTER two years of collecting, a Camperdown stalwart has been forced to pull the pin on the bottle top collection.

Peter James, who has been collecting bottle tops throughout Camperdown for Lids 4 Kids, announced he has stopped collecting as of last Friday.

“Unfortunately, I will no longer be collecting bottle tops,” he said.

“I’m so sorry to tell my collectors.

“I’m very grateful to them all – they’ve done such a fantastic deed over the two years, but that’s all.”

The decision follows an announcement from Lids 4 Kids last month that they have changed the way they collect bottle tops.

The new system requires collectors to purchase a postage bag to fill with bottle tops before posting to Canberra, which costs $79 per bag.

Mr James said the change, which includes the closure of closer recycling points, left him with no other choice.

“It’s going to cost me nearly $80 per box to send them to Canberra – I can’t afford that,” he said.

“When they get to Canberra, they’re not really used because we can’t send them overseas.

“They can’t be sent overseas due to current freighting problems with ships burning down.”
