Game 150 for Hay
TALENTED all-rounder Tyson Hay celebrated his 150th game in style last weekend.
Hay, a popular senior player with the Noorat Terang Cricket Club since season 2008/09, also notched up his 150th wicket on Saturday, finishing the day with figures of 3/22.
The grand final rematch between the Lions and Hawkesdale will be long remembered by the club stalwart and his team-mates.
While both clubs had five players missing from last season’s grand final, the Lions have managed to improve their playing list while Hawkesdale was left impacted by football injuries and retirements.
The Lions won the toss and elected to bat on a ground that looked and played slow after heavy rain late in the week.
The Lions’ opening partnership wasn’t able to emulate the feat of the previous week, losing Dom Moloney early.
Isaac Tombs and Liam Geary put on 43 before Isaac went for 20, Liam for 19 and Bailey Kavenagh 1; leaving the Lions struggling at 4/40.
Hay, in his milestone game, and Isaac Kenna (20) batted beautifully to add 67 for the fifth wicket.
Max Heffernan added 12 and Tim Keane joined Hay at 6/133.
Boundaries were hard to come by, with Hay achieving four of the five and one six on his way to making 71 from 63 balls.
Keane finished with 18 before the side was dismissed off the final ball of the innings with an impressive 183 total.
Hay entered the game needing three wickets to bring up his 150th.
His first came in his second over, and his second in his fifth over.
Three dropped chances off his bowling put his 150th wicket in doubt, but the fourth ball of his final over brought up the milestone.
Hay started his senior career as a 10 year-old for Terang in 2008/09.
He has accumulated 2249 runs at an average of 19.2.
His highest score to date is 102, with nine 50s recorded.
A confident all-rounder, Hay has now taken 150 wickets at 18.6, with best bowling figures of 5/25 (he also has 56 catches and three runouts on his impressive list of achievements).
His career at Terang also included being captain/coach for two seasons and he has twice represented Australia in the Deaf World Cup.
Team-mate Isaac Toombs’ spin made big inroads into the lower order last weekend, taking 4/6 from five overs.
Earlier, Isaac Kenna bowled a good line to take 1/11 from six overs.
Last week Charlie Scanlon didn’t get the opportunity to bowl, but showed his captains that the ball was coming out well to finish with 1/8 from six.
Tim Keane wrapped up the innings with 1/1 from seven balls, dismissing Hawkesdale for 48 in the 28th over.
This weekend sees all three senior sides play away games.
The firsts will play Koroit at Victoria Park; the seconds play Dennington on their turf ground and the thirds play Spring Creek at Winslow.
The under 15s were washed out and their two-day match will now revert to a one-day game against Allansford Panmure at Panmure on Friday afternoon.
The under 13s struggled with the bat with sundries making the bulk of their 8/48 runs, with three being the best score.
Northern Raiders took the win, reaching 3/56.
Wicket takers were Ned Abbott 1/5 from three overs and Zac Clarke 1/4 from two overs.
Most bowlers were economical in their spells.
The under 17s started their two-day match at Terang against Warrnambool on Tuesday afternoon.
Batting first, the Lions were dismissed in the 28th over for 83.
Sam Lillico faced 60 balls for his 22 with two boundaries and was the last batsman dismissed.
Max Heffernan was next best with 12 from 22 balls.
Charlie Roberts faced 41 balls for eight and Jack Farrell saw off 24 balls.
Warrnambool faced eight overs to be 2-23 at stumps.
Charlie Roberts 1/4 and Max Heffernan 1/12 got the breakthroughs.
Early wickets will make this game very interesting.
